Once a cop...

On March 8, 2001 at approximately 1700 hours, a motor vehicle pursuit was initiated in Lincoln Park due to a motorist's erratic driving. It was the standard lights and siren affair, up and around the streets, around the park. An amused observer to this everyday police activity was retired Police Officer John Eggers, who had been a workhorse in the radio cars in the West District for many years. John had just returned from shopping and had bags of groceries in his arms. John watched as it passed him as he stood on the sidewalk. The guy was really driving crazy and could cause a lot of harm to vehicles and pedestrians alike. The guy executed a U-turn and came back toward John. As the car passed again, John reached into his grocery bag and pulled out a throwable object and winged it at the car. It was a kiwi fruit, compact, baseball sized and great for accurate throwing. The kiwi whacked the side of the car with a loud bang and the driver jammed on the brakes, bailed out and was caught hiding in a nearby house. After he was collared he asked the officers "Why did you shoot at me?" They didn't know what he was talking about and the loud thump remained a mystery. For John Eggers, it seemed like just another day at the office. Certain reflexive actions kicked in to help a brother and protect the public. John's action, however unorthodox sounding, possibly helped to terminate potential damage to persons and or property.
